What is Doxycycline Monohydrate?

Monodox (doxycycline monohydrate) is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.

How does Doxycyline Monohydrate work?

This medication is known as a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).

What is Doxycyline Monohydrate used for?

It is used to treat many kinds of infections, like dental, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections. It also treats acne, Lyme disease, malaria, and certain sexually transmitted infections.

Doxycyline Monohydrate Side effects:

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:
• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
• difficulty breathing
• fever
• itching in the rectal or genital area
• pain on swallowing
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
• severe stomach pain or cramps
• unusual bleeding or bruising
• unusually weak or tired
• yellowing of the eyes or skin

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• diarrhea
• loss of appetite
• nausea, vomiting

Doxycycline Monohydrate Precautions:

Before taking doxycycline, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to tetracycline or related drugs (e.g., minocycline); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, problems swallowing, esophagus problems (e.g., hiatal hernia, reflux disease-GERD), stomach surgery (e.g., gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery), lupus.

Doxycycline may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not work as well. Do not have any immunizations/vaccinations while using this medication unless your doctor tells you to.

This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using doxycycline.

Children younger than 8 years may be more sensitive to the side effects of doxycycline, especially tooth discoloration. Tooth discoloration has also occurred in older children and young adults. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with the doctor.

This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It may harm an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for more details.

This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Doxycycline Monohydrate Drug Interaction:

Some products that may interact with this drug include: retinoid medications taken by mouth (such as acitretin, isotretinoin), strontium, anti-seizure medications (e.g., phenobarbital, phenytoin), digoxin, warfarin.

Although most antibiotics (including doxycycline) are unlikely to affect hormonal birth control such as pills, patch, or ring, a few antibiotics (such as rifampin, rifabutin) can decrease their effectiveness. This could result in pregnancy. If you use hormonal birth control, ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

This product can affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
