What is Eluxadoline?

Eluxadoline is a mixed opioid receptor agonist (mu) and antagonist (delta) that is used to treat diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel disease. It has mixed opioid receptor activity and is used for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea.

How does Eluxadoline work?

Eluxadoline (Viberzi) works in your digestive system to lessen bowel contractions and slow the motion in your intestines.

What is Eluxadoline used for?

Eluxadoline is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D; a condition that causes stomach pain, cramping, or loose or watery stools) in adults. Eluxadoline is in a class of medications called mu-opioid receptor agonists. It works by decreasing bowel activity.

Eluxadoline Side effects:

Viberzi (eluxadoline) is a mu-opioid receptor agonist used in adults to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). Common side effects of Viberzi include:
• constipation
• nausea
• abdominal pain
• upper respiratory tract infection
• vomiting
• runny or stuffy nose
• bloating
• bronchitis
• dizziness
• gas
• rash
• fatigue

The recommended dosage of Viberzi in adults is 100 mg twice daily, taken with food. Viberzi may interact with cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, antiretrovirals, rifampin, eltrombopag, ciprofloxacin, gemfibrozil, fluconazole, clarithromycin, paroxetine, bupropion, alosetron, anticholinergics, opioids, rosuvastatin, alfentanil, cyclosporine, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, fentanyl, pimozide, quinidine, sirolimus, or tacrolimus. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before taking this drug. It is unknown if Viberzi passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Eluxadoline Precautions:

Before taking Eluxadoline, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: personal or family history of a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol), gallbladder removal surgery, liver disease, pancreatitis, other stomach/abdominal problems (such as blockage, sphincter of Oddi disease/dysfunction, previous long-lasting or severe constipation).

This drug may make you drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis). Drinking a lot of alcohol while taking this medication may increase the risk of pancreatitis.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially constipation or stomach/abdominal pain.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown if Eluxadoline passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
