What is Eslicarbazepine Acetate?

Eslicarbazepine acetate, sold under the brand names Aptiom and Zebinix among others, is an anticonvulsant medication approved for use in Europe and the United States as monotherapy or as additional therapy for partial-onset seizures epilepsy. Similarly to oxcarbazepine, ESL behaves as a prodrug to–licarbazepine.

How does Eslicarbazepine Acetate work?

Eslicarbazepine acetate works by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSC), especially in rapidly firing neurons. It has a much lower affinity for VGSC in the resting state compared with carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine.

What is Eslicarbazepine Acetate used for?

Eslicarbazepine is used alone or with other medications to treat a certain type of seizure disorder (focal seizures). It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants. Eslicarbazepine may reduce the number of seizures you have.
